Levers: Narrative

Stories are what make sense.

(For the 1st post in this series, go here)

Another lever that we can adjust is the narratives that we construct. Our narrative can come from our experiences, our perceptions, and the expectations of society. Depending on the story we believe, the experience can change drastically. Did that person cut us off on purpose because they are rude, or did they get distracted by their kids in the back seat?

Questions for identifying your narratives:

  • What stories am I telling me about this situation?

  • How do I feel I should act?

  • How does society tell me I should act?

  • How do I actually want to act?
